Actually, the original idea came from a visit to a restaurant here in San Francisco. Suppenkuche. Very tasty german food. Lots of sausages. Well, they had a couple hundred die cut butterflies on the ceiling and wall. I loved the look but hated the fact they were really stiff and wouldnt even respond to breeze (assuming that place ever had a breeze). I started to wonder if it would be possible to make them move but also make them responsive to human presence, whether that presence be in the form of audio or webcam input. Thats how it all started.

I am familiar with the butterfly-mobile. I have seen bird versions. The movement will get better the more we play with it. The thing we wanted to make sure of was that the butterfly didnt have to be hard wired into place. Ideally, you could just pick it up, look at it, and place it back down without having to disconnect pistons or counterweights. That was why we chose magnets in the first place.

really nice setup, and great to see the process.
the systematic arrangement is very cool.
i'd love to see some more less symmetric ones, or even a swarm or crowd of them.
if there was a body and a head to hold the wings, aka complete butterflies, it would be nice to hang them from the ceiling. they could move with the wind. you know, when i was little i had that (i don't know how to say it in english) butterfly-"mobile". it's a wooden butterfly, hangin from the ceiling. i don't remeber how it was built, but i could pull it and then it flapped for some seconds. no batteries or so, just because of the balance between body and wings... maybe something like that could be used to get better motion....

lone, the lightbox prints were variations of the magnetic structure code. The data was output from Processing and imported into Maya where depth of field blurring and ambient occlusion lighting were added for the final renders. Fun!

clicky, thanks! Glad you like them. It was really odd to see them move. When they were first hooked up, there was a bug that caused them to spasm oddly. I almost think that was a more successful variation because they really seemed to be struggling to break free of the pins. Hopefully when we revisit the project, the movement will become a bit more natural (and thereby more creepy). Also hope to increase the range of movement so the wings can go more vertical, but the wing magnets end up repulsing each other or worse, getting attracted to the metal pins. Lots to do, but twas definitely a rewarding project to be a part of.

Simply stunning installation. The butterflies are my favorite, although that bit about the movement being creepy simply means you did an excellent job mimicking nature. Congratulations. I'm sure i'll find out somehow, but where ever the next barbarian show is i'd love to know a ways in advance, excuse for a road trip.

This was a beautiful piece, and it is nice to hear a little about what went into the wing patterns. Overall the whole show was excellent. Did you do the Magnetic Structure Prints? They reminded me of the gravity particle work you post here quite a bit.
